Petrol vs Electric vehicles carbon footprint

BlueSkies: The Genesis of a Debate

BlueSkies all began with a spirited discussion between our founders, Daniel Owen & Andy Black. The burning question: Is an electric vehicle truly more sustainable than retaining a decade-old car? While numerous studies had been conducted by institutions, governments, and researchers, their focus was often broad and for policy making. Specific comparisons between individual car models were hard to come by.

Does the environmental toll of producing an EV battery truly eclipse the emissions of an older vehicle, especially when the latter's manufacturing emissions have already been absorbed? We also realised that these nuanced questions extended to many different areas of an individual's footprint, from home heating to holiday flights.

Our initial focus was on vehicles. Beyond just the operating emissions, we were keen on understanding a car's complete environmental impact from production to end-of-life. This sent Dan on a deep dive into scientific studies, pairing insights with comprehensive vehicle databases. The findings were both enlightening and compelling.

Vehice Lifecycle analysis

Transparency became our guiding principle. Our dedication to clarity and openness led us to author a white paper that laid the foundation for our first calculator methodology: "Your Car's Carbon Footprint: A Comprehensive Lifecycle Assessment for the Individual Vehicle Owner".

Our Other Calculators

We're now in the process of developing our calculators for other crucial areas like Homes, Food, and Flights. As these methodologies are created, we will publish them here in due course.
